'The Paper Trail'

"They say what goes up must come down, but I ain't reached my cruising altitude. Take a look at what I did, but can you imagine what I'm about to do!"

Music affects my psyche like Adderall or some bomb trees. Listening to the lyrics can spark the passion inside me. Not only for the social settings, music is a daily medley. It can keep my mind at peace or flip and wire me like a beast. I love music and still use it to attach to memories, like this one I’m here to share about T.I. so listen please.

T.I. is one of the rappers I grew up listening to as a result of my brother’s playlists. Without looking for debate on T.I. or his music, I have a lot of nostalgia when I hear his music, especially older albums. One specific memory that comes to mind is playing Dirt on Xbox 360 and listening to the Paper Trail album, which came out back in 2008! I normally associate unique memories with individual songs, however, I couldn’t narrow it down to just one song from this album since I love the whole thing!

My brother used to have this old iPod loaded with nearly 14,000 songs which inherently he downloaded through *ahem* unsupported methods, and that iPod was my favorite item of his. I would borrow his iPod, whether secretly or with permission, so I could listen to his music, from Eminem to DMX to Westside Connection and anything in between. Let me remind you, I was around 8 years old at this time!

The most consistent time I listened to his iPod was when I would play Xbox, where I could plug his music in and mute the video game audio. Similar to most kids playing Xbox, I would be there for hours with this rap music blasting from the surround sound stereo in our living room. Around this time, the rally car racing game Dirt had just come out, and Alex was able to bring it home from his work at Hollywood Video – Throwback!

Whenever playing Dirt, I queued up T.I.’s Paper Trail album, and would listen on repeat, drifting into a sort of mental bliss. To this day, when songs from that album come on, I reminisce on the days of Xbox gaming and iPod streaming! More than a beat and some lyrics, I am able to hold on to vivid moments in life in conjunction with the music I hear at the time. What would I do without it??
