For me, music has been so fundamental in my life, I have associated many memories to specific songs. Some people simply listen and enjoy music in the moment, but I not only hear them in that moment, I am able to connect those songs to the memories I have created. This is my way of sharing stories and memories I have. I will tell you about what comes to my mind when I hear certain songs, including old, new, obscure, and everything in between.
The first song which brings up a strong memory is ‘Gotta Get That Money’ by Too $hort. If you know this song, you know how upbeat it is. When this song comes on, you can’t help but feel a wave of energy take over you. The first time I heard this song, as with most songs in my life, was with my brother.
When I was a freshman in high school, my brother had just gotten a dark green ’93 Toyota Pickup in great condition. This truck came from a neighbor who lived just down the street from us, and when my brother got it, I fell in love with it. It’s a tiny truck, with 2wd, and a bench seat, why was I so excited about it? Because my brother was into it. When he likes something, you can bet that I am going to like it too, because I would look up to him for anything.
What did we do right away with this new truck? Got a new stereo system! My brother and I drove to the Audio Source on Highway 99 and picked out a new head unit and speakers. After a short time of waiting around the shop, the new stereo system was installed and ready to blast. Alex and I hop in the truck and connect his phone to the new Bluetooth. We’re both excited to hear what this new system could do!
First song that comes on, ‘Gotta Get That Money’. This is the first time Alex showed me the song, and I loved it instantly! I’m instantly giddy with excitement as I get to be with my brother for this first upgrade on his first vehicle. That memory comes up every time I hear this song, and I started recognizing that many memories I have come back to mind simply from music.
Oh, and if you didn’t know by now, that little green truck was handed down from my brother to me, and I love all the memories related to my brother and the pickup!
