Titan Tips - Kevin Kelly

“Productivity is for robots. What humans are going to be really good at is asking questions, being creative, and experiences.”

As Tim Ferriss refers to him, Kevin Kelly might be the real life most interesting man in the world. Co-founder of Wired magazine, co-founder of the All Species Foundation, best-selling author, co-founder of the Rosetta Project, and serves on the board of the Long Now Foundation. Expressing his credentials is grand and wonderful for those who wish to research him further, however, I am simply going to share some of his insights from the Tools of Titans piece as they relate to my life.

One unexpected suggestion that Kevin makes is his belief that every human should experience building their own home. That just aligned too perfectly with my current mindset to not mention. Within the last week, I have reinvigorated my love for designing my own home and have been constantly drawing the house that I am going to build, down to the type of wood stove I will incorporate!

Since starting my own blog, I am more inclined to read profiles on other writers, journalists, bloggers, and creatives alike. I am intrigued to learn from others with regards to their experiences, insights, and advice, as I strive to improve my writing ability, content quality, and takeaways in my own life. An interesting lesson Kevin shares is that he writes in order to get ideas, not to express ideas he already has. Each day doesn’t always bless me with new and fluid ideas simply waiting for me to put into writing for others to see, but as I discipline myself to write consistently, I realize that the ideas I generate are often formulated throughout the writing process.

Kevin Kelly continues to spark my curiosity with each paragraph in his Tools of Titans profile, as he touches on building your own house, writing, travel, creativity and worst-case scenarios. I’m sure you have learned by now how I desire to travel and explore the world, and Kevin Kelly touches on that exact topic, further enticing me to go head on into this crazy world. With zero money, Kevin decided to travel when he was young and had experiences that money simply could now buy. The difference between traveling after retirement, essentially on vacation, and traveling with no money, little to no real-world knowledge, and allowing the experiences of your travels to affect your life is the most thrilling and enticing matters of destiny for my own journey.

Kevin Kelly offers an outlook on life challenging the hyper-productive, hustle motivated society we currently live in, which subliminally feels like permission to actually go for what you want in life, rather than limiting yourself based on productivity standards. I am blessed to have the ability to learn lessons like this and push myself to think differently while I am a young adult just getting introduced to the real world.

"Productive is for your middle ages. When you’re young, you want to be prolific and make and do things, but you don’t want to measure them in terms of productivity. You want to measure them in terms of extreme performance, you want to measure them in extreme satisfaction."
